To an old purist like me, I do not like to see athletes running back and forth across the football field to cheer on their teammates during the concluding races of a close track meet. In fact, it would lead to disqualification if it happened during the state series at the end of the year.It is, however, quite a scene and a great show of enthusiasm when it is taking place. At the East Central Invitational the other night, the home team Trojans were trying to break a relay record in the last race of the meet. The entire girls squad except for the 4 girls running covered both sides of the field to cheer each runner on. It worked! The girls broke the existing record. Not to be outdone, the boys did the same and helped lead their teammates to a very narrow win over the Franklin County Wildcat team. Before the last race was completed, all the schools were getting involved in cheering their teams from side to side. So you can see, kids still like team sports.
