Australia wanted a penalty in the 20th minute when Thaisa bundled into Tameka Yallop, but referee Esther Staubli waved away their appeals and the decision stood after VAR adjudged the Matildas midfielder handled in the build-up.Matters were made worse for Australia when Elise Kellond-Knight recklessly dragged down Leticia Santos and Marta sent Lydia Williams the wrong way from the resultant spot-kick, becoming the first player to score at five Women’s World Cups in the process.5 – Marta is the first player to score in five different editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, netting in 2019, 2015, 2011, 2007 and 2003. Cristiane followed up on her hat trick from the opening win over Jamaica to add a second, but Caitlin Foord gave Australia hope. And after Chloe Logarzo’s fortuitous strike had restored parity, Australia completed a famous comeback when Monica headed into her own net and Sam Kerr was deemed not to be interfering in a contentious decision. Related News Marta’s 16th Women’s World Cup goal was not enough to inspire Brazil to victory as Australia rallied to a controversial 3-2 win Thursday in Group C. Brazil’s record scorer, who went off injured at halftime, moved level with Miroslav Klose’s tally of goals at World Cup finals when she opened the scoring in Montpellier with a 27th-minute penalty. Women’s World Cup 2019: USWNT went ‘overboard’ celebrating vs. Thailand, says Hope Solo Australia picked up where it left off and equalized when Logarzo’s long-range effort found its way through a crowd of players.Brazil’s misery was compounded eight minutes later. Monica inadvertently turned Emily van Egmond’s ball beyond Barbara, and although an offside call against Kerr seemed to have bailed out the Brazilians, the decision was overturned after a VAR review and Vadao’s side slumped to a humiliating defeat.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Drake University women’s basketball team plays its third-straight road contest on Friday night when it travels to UNI with a 7 p.m. tipoff scheduled at the McLeod Center. The in-state matchup will be broadcast online via The Valley On ESPN3. Drake (17-7, 10-3 MVC) and UNI (15-9, 10-3 MVC) along with Missouri State are locked in a first place tie on top of the Missouri Valley Conference standings. The Panthers defeated the Bulldogs by a score of 79-73 on Jan. 24 at the Knapp Center. Drake dropped its last game at Indiana State, 68-53, as the Bulldogs struggled to shoot the basketball at 30.9 percent from the floor and made just 3-of-20 attempts from behind the three-point line. Even with the poor shooting, Drake only trailed by five points at halftime, but an 11-2 run by Indiana State to start the third quarter proved to be the difference. Junior Lizzy Wendell (Blue Springs, Mo.) scored 18 points while sophomore Maddy Dean (Jordan, Minn.) recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Indiana State held Drake, the MVC’s top scoring team at 80.2 points per game, to its lowest season total. The Sycamores are one of two league teams that hold opponents to less than 60.0 a game. UNI is the other top defensive team as it holds opponents to a league-low 58.2 points per game. Friday night features the MVC’s top offense and defense in a game that will factor heavily in the race for the regular season title. Junior Madison Weekly leads the Panthers and ranks second behind Wendell in the MVC at 17.3 points per game. Following Friday night’s game, Drake returns to the Knapp Center for its final two home games of the season as Loyola visits on Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. followed by Bradley on Feb. 28 at 2 p.m.Print Friendly Version

Tottenham see Southgate as top replacement for Pochettinoby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveTottenham see England boss Gareth Southgate as their top replacement for Mauricio Pochettino if the Argentine quits the club.Spurs chiefs believe Southgate’s relationship with the club’s England stars would make him the ideal successor to Pochettino, who increasingly looks as though he is in his last season at Tottenham, says the Mirror.Pochettino said before last season’s Champions League final that he could might leave if Tottenham lifted the European Cup – as it would have been the culmination of a five-year project. And speculation Real Madrid will come in for him refuses to go away, with Bernabeu boss Zinedine Zidane already feeling the pressure after returning to the La Liga giants.Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Harry Winks, Danny Rose and Eric Dier have all made huge strides with England under Southgate’s tutelage. And that made him the perfect candidate when Pochettino’s comments in the lead-up to the Champions League final forced Spurs chairman Daniel Levy to consider potential replacements.
